Does Loctite Work on Plastic? (All You Need To Know)

So, does Loctite work on plastic?

Yes, Loctite does work on plastic. But not just any plastic, and not just any Loctite. Specific Loctite products, such as the Loctite Super Glue Plastics Bonding System, can be used on plastic.

When used correctly, Loctite offers a quick fix for plastic repairs. The bond created is extremely durable, water-resistant, and sets within seconds.

Can You Use Loctite For All Plastics?

While Loctite can be used to bond plastic surfaces, it doesn’t work for all plastic. For instance, it’s not meant to bond with very soft plastics, such as PTFE or Teflon. For such plastics, you will need a plastic welding kit or something more specialized.

Does Loctite Power Grab Work on Plastic?

We don’t recommend using Loctite Power Grab for plastic as the glue is primarily designed for construction materials like drywall, concrete, and wood. While it’s possible to use it on plastics, It might not offer the best bond. 

For the best strength and durability, use any of the other Loctite plastic-specific adhesives, such as Loctite Super Glue

In general, before using any Loctite product, be sure to check the product label to verify its suitability for the specific plastic item you plan to use it on.

Does Loctite Super Glue Work on Plastic?

Yes, it does. In fact, Loctite Super Glue is arguably the best Loctite glue for plastic as it is specifically designed to work on a variety of plastics, ranging from plastic toys to utensils. It employs a two-step process, starting with the application of an activator to prep the surface, followed by the super glue. 

Does Loctite 243 Work on Plastic?

Loctite 243 is a threadlocker, and it’s meant for joining metals. While it may provide some level of adhesion on some plastics, it’s not primarily intended to bond plastics. For this reason, we advise against using it for plastic. 

Does Loctite 242 Work on Plastic?

Similar to Loctite 243, Loctite 242 is a threadlocker meant for metal parts. So, it’s not recommended to use the product on plastics, especially thermoplastic, as this could result in the cracking of the plastic. 

Loctite 242 is ideal for fasteners between 1/4″ and 3/4″ (6 to 20 mm) and is known for its resistance to shock and vibration.

Does Loctite Glass Glue Work on Plastic?

Loctite Glass Glue is meant for glass items. While it might offer some adhesion on plastic, it wouldn’t be as effective as a product specifically designed for plastics.

Does Green Loctite Work on Plastic?

Green Loctite, such as Loctite 290, is designed as a threadlocker for pre-assembled bolts up to 1/2″ in diameter. Like the other threadlockers, we don’t advise using it on plastic.

Does Blue Loctite Work on Plastic?

Blue Loctite, such as Loctite 242 or 243, is designed primarily for metal-to-metal applications. While they may work on some hard plastics, they’re not primarily designed for plastic-to-plastic applications.

What Types of Plastic Can You Use Loctite for?

Loctite can be used on a variety of plastic materials. This includes, but is not limited to: 

  • ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene): ABS is commonly used in 3D printing and pipe production, automotive parts, and toys.
  • Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene (PE): Common in items like plastic chairs, containers, and water bottles.
  • PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): Used widely in the construction of pipes, doors, windows, and medical devices.
  • Polystyrene: Often used for disposable cutlery, CD cases, and model kits.

Does Loctite Work on Plastic Screws?

Yes, Loctite can be used on plastic screws. Loctite Threadlocker products, such as Loctite 242, are designed to prevent loosening of screws due to vibrations. 

The good thing about the Loctite Threadlocker is that it cures in the absence of air and in the presence of metal ions. And it can be removed with hand tools for easy disassembly. 

Does Loctite Work on Plastic and Metal?

Yes, some Loctite products are designed to work on both plastic and metal.

For instance, Loctite Epoxy Plastic Bonder forms a tough, durable bond on most plastics, as well as metal surfaces. The product consists of an epoxy resin and a hardener. When mixed in equal volumes, the resin and hardener react to produce a tough, rigid, high-strength bond that can withstand heavy loads.

How to Use Loctite on Plastic

To ensure a successful bond, follow these steps: 

  • Prep the Surfaces: The surfaces to be bonded should be clean, dry, and free from dust or grease.
  • Apply the Adhesive: If the product comes with an activator, apply the activator first, followed by the adhesive.
  • Join the Parts Together: Apply light pressure for a minimum of 15 seconds.
  • Wait for It to Set: Allow the adhesive to cure for a few minutes for optimal results.

These steps for using each Loctite glue may slightly differ from the steps above. Always check the label before you get started. 

How Long Does Loctite Take to Dry on Plastic?

Most Loctite adhesives, such as the Super Glue Plastics Bonding System, dry within seconds of application when used correctly. However, for the best results, allow the bond to cure overnight or for 24 hours.  

The exact drying time depends on various factors, including the specific Loctite product used, the thickness of the application, and environmental conditions.

How to Remove Loctite From Plastic

Removing Loctite from plastic should be done with caution to avoid damaging the item. 

The process is quite straightforward – apply a small amount of acetone (found in nail polish remover) to a cloth and gently rub the area.

Be careful not to use too much, as acetone can sometimes discolor or damage some plastics. Always test a small, hidden area first to ensure it won’t damage your item.
